Freedom Through Passive Income

Ep 353 - Motivational Monday - Old Status Symbols

Flip & Dani Robison Season 1 Episode 353

We've also done a little bit of the old status symbols too. So we're just going to talk about both and ultimately, what motivates us these days at this stage of life. We wanted to share what are the old status symbols of building wealth and having success in life and comparing it to life achievements.

People do view it as whether we're using it as a status symbol or not, people view it as a status symbol. They see a Corvette, they see wealth, they see a big house in Florida, they see wealth. But for us it’s an achievement or something we really wanted ever since and not something we wanted to show off to the world. But we would say more than anything that we are grateful for the time freedom, the financial freedom, the geography freedom. Those three types of freedom are what we’re more grateful for than a Corvette and a nice house. And we think more and more people are chasing that. They're realizing it's possible. And they're saying, I'll sacrifice the nice car and the house, so that I can achieve this. And by doing that, ultimately, they get to have that nice car and house just later in life. So we think it's a really cool transition of priorities that we're seeing.

Hey everybody! Flip and Dani here, founders of the Freedom Real Estate Group Family of Companies, and welcome to another episode of our podcast, which is called Freedom Through Passive Income. That's right. Welcome to another episode. And this is a Motivational Monday. This one's called "Old Status Symbols".

That's right, I kind of laughed about this one. Because what we're gonna be talking about is so, so very true. But we've also done a little bit of the old status symbols too. So we're just going to talk about both and ultimately, what motivates us these days, at this stage of life, and so, do you want to jump into the old status symbols? What are the old status symbols of building wealth and having success in life?

Well, the cars, you know, the big house, the watches, you know, the jewelry and the clothes, you know, anything that's flashy. And, you know, because it was not only with the house and, and the car, but anything that's flashy. So when you walk in the room, people can tell, oh, he's made money. Yes. You know, or he's got his money dripping off of him or whatever. You know, those are the old status symbols. Yes. You know, and it's kind of, it's kind of funny, because now, it's not, well, I mean, there are still people that do that, but it's a small, it's a smaller percentage every year, it's a smaller percentage of those people.

You know, it was funny, because it made me think of years ago, when we were working on cruise ships, and we were selling artwork. So here we are selling pieces of paper that are thousands of dollars. And we have to tell somebody why this piece of paper is important for them to buy and to put it on their wall at home. And, you know, and you just know, there's some people that can't afford the $20,000 piece of paper that goes on the wall. And so you look for those status symbols, but you're on a cruise ship, you know, and everyone's wearing swim trunks and flip flops and tank tops, you know, and so it was, we lost our status symbols, you know, on cruise ships, because nobody, nobody was walking around with their watches, clothes and everything. But anyway, so, you know, it's the biggest change now is, you know what you call it, you say the ultimate flex is freedom. Yes. You know, that's the status symbol now. I can go do whatever. There's two people, just recently on Facebook, they're friends of ours, they're not Facebook friends, they're actual friends of ours. Right. One did a vacation to Europe and Japan for like, six weeks. I can't remember how long they were gone. They were gone for a very long time. You know, and then another person I just saw, because I don't see her very often on Facebook. But I just saw she said she just got back from the trip that she started in September. And we're in December now, just to give you an idea. So she was gone September, October, November and some of December. So that's a three and a half month vacation. She did multiple things. And she said now she has a better grasp of reality of what she needs to do to relax and you know, I'm just like, holy smokes. That's freedom right there. Yeah. Yes. Pardon me. I'm gonna leave for three and a half months. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Right.

And I think that this is something important to talk about. And it's relevant to us because we have done a little bit of both, right? You have the cool Corvette. I've always wanted to own a Corvette, and you bought one. And I was like, yay, I didn't even have to be the one that bought one and we have one. Yay! And what's funny is that I wanted one too, but I mean, I wanted one because I wanted a Corvette. I wasn't because of a status symbol. I don't drive it around. And, you know, look at me, I'm all Mr. Fancy Pants. And that's not me. I don't use it on Facebook to say look what I have. Yes. If you do what I do, you can own this too. I agree with that. Yeah, that's not why we do it. And then well, then there's the big house. Yeah, yeah. And that wasn't a status symbol either.

So there's, there's part of a, I think we talked about it like this because people do view it as whether we're using it as a status symbol or not, people view it as a status symbol, right? They see a Corvette, they see wealth, they see a big, huge house in Florida, they see wealth. But for us, like when I first wanted a Corvette, it's because when I was younger, one of the guys I went out on a date with, borrowed his dad's Corvette and picked me up, and I was like, woah, your dad's rich, I'm gonna have a Corvette someday. And that's where, like the love of you know, that car kind of set into my mental, like, I'm going to achieve enough wealth that I can buy a Corvette. And so it was an achievement thing when you bought it was like, Yes! We did it. And then the house was like cruise ships, like we're in this small box. And ever since leaving, like being on cruise ships for so long, in that very, very small room. For so many years, we've always had big houses. And now that we own so many companies, it's nice to have a big house where you can have offices and gyms and you use all the rooms for some of them are guest rooms, but some of them are for us to work and to us not have to travel to go to a gym. So again, it was an achievement thing. And something that makes sense, not necessarily a status symbol. But see people still view it that way.

Yeah, but I would say more than anything that I am grateful for when it comes to status symbols. It's the time freedom, the financial freedom, the geography freedom, right? Those three types of freedom are what I'm more grateful for than a Corvette and a nice house. And I think more and more people are chasing that. They're realizing it's possible. And they're saying, hey, I'll sacrifice the nice car and the house, so that I can achieve this. And by doing that, ultimately, they get to have that nice car and house just later in life. Right? Not sooner. So I think it's a really, really cool transition of priorities that we're seeing.

Yeah, and what's funny is when we were looking at a house in Florida, we were actually looking at houses smaller than the house that we had in Ohio, because houses in Florida cost more than houses in Ohio. Right. So we were looking to not upgrade, we were looking to downgrade but just something in Florida. Yeah. And the house that we found was the same price as those smaller houses. But this one came with the extra bedrooms and the bigger square footage on a golf course, you know. Yeah. But the point is, is that location, geographical location, you know, we're way in a different location than what we were originally looking for, but because we can. Yeah. You know, it takes seven minutes to get from our driveway just to get out of our community. I mean, oh my gosh, I used to be six minutes away from McDonald's and the grocery store. Right, yeah. But now we have that freedom. And so this house wasn't a Oh, look at us now. Look what we have. No, it's we were very fortunate, very blessed to be able to get this house for the same prices, than the much smaller houses in the ideal location, but we don't need to be in that location. Because we have, you know.

Yeah, yeah, absolutely. I love it. This is very motivating to me, you know, it's everything a lot of the targets that we set in life are to achieve these things. Right. More importantly, the time financial and geographical freedoms and very, very, very happy and we live a blessed life because of being motivated by these things. So it's pretty cool. That's right.
